Tazeen Qayyum, untitled, 2025 ink on canvas
quiet contemplations / urgent meditations
An intimate evening of experimental performance art with Tazeen Qayyum and Debashis Sinha
8 February, 2025
quiet contemplations / urgent meditations marks the apotheosis of Tazeen's contemplative, physically-demanding and pressing work with text-based abstraction. It is a process she has been exploring for a number of years, and this collaboration with Debashis Sinha is part of a journey to push the boundaries of her own practice further.
Deb, who has been deploying machine learning and AI in his sound art, is returning to acoustic percussion for this collaboration, with a focus on process and theoretical principles of performance. What is uniquely exciting about the performance on February 8 is that there is no fixed agenda or predetermined outcome. Both artists are using the opportunity to explore and push the bounds of their own practices in a highly experimental manner that recalls the avant-garde arts movements of the early to mid-20th century. Particularly exciting about this evening is a Brechtian engagement with the audience, wherein the audience maintains an active participation, and becomes wholly integral to the success of the performance.
Given the experimental nature of this project, there are no stipulations or expectations of the artists, and the work promises to be truly unique in their repertoires. The project is a compelling documentation of contemporary artistic expression.
